EN: CARNE – The Unsustainable Footprint
PT: Carne – A Pegada Insustentável
(Portugal, 2023, 75 min)
A gentle call for a cease-fire at the table, with inspiring stories of how a diet change can help the planet, animals and human health. This documentary enters the lobbies of the European Parliament, visits animal sanctuaries in the North and Center of Portugal, talks to environmental expert George Monbiot in the UK, and travels to Lebanon, where a private hospital is changing the lives of their patients through veganism. Because change is urgent and still within our reach.

Why was it selected:
Exploring the environmental, health, and ethical consequences of meat consumption, this documentary portrays the silent revolution many are making from within by adopting a plant-based diet. With a good combination of historical footage and current interviews, Carne also features a diverse soundtrack that helps set the tone from stark to hopeful. As organisers, our biggest challenge was finding a place with a connection to the subject and available to host this screening, which we wanted to be the opening session of CLIT 2024. The new management of Loja da Horta de Setúbal, a local biological supermaket, welcomed the idea and added a gift for everyone who attended: a 10% off coupon at their shop.
This inspiring documentary by Hugo de Almeida went on to win our “Glad I Came!” audience award for Best Documentary.
